Dear PS/IS 209 Families,

The new school year is a time for excitement and a fresh start. As I enter the PS/IS 209 community as Principal, I reflect on the previous years as well as a look ahead to a new beginning.

It is with diverse experience that I join PS/IS 209, having held several positions throughout my tenure as a NYC DOE employee. I began my career as a para-professional and then transitioned into a middle school Social Studies teacher which led to becoming an Assistant Principal in District 21. After 5 years as an Assistant Principal, I transitioned to Principal of IS 27 where I have spent the last 6 years of my career. All of these positions helped shape the leader I am today. Every position I have held has enabled me to connect with teachers, parents, and students, build rapport with them and work collaboratively to support everyone in reaching and exceeding their goals.

As a passionate educator I firmly believe that school communities have the power to change lives. Having worked in Title I schools for over 25 years I can attest that a child’s economic status, race or family situation should not determine the quality of education a child receives. When children are provided with dynamic teachers and strong leadership they can become success stories. My experience building parent partnerships has allowed me to unite the school community with student families. I value the relationship between schools, family and community as together we afford children every opportunity to succeed. This is done by building a supportive environment for teachers so that through professional development and collaboration we provide an equitable and excellent education for all students.

This school year opening is unlike any other. Some students are coming back to the building for the first time in 18 months. Some staff as well. This year the chancellor has asked that we embrace the opening of school year as a homecoming, welcoming everyone back to in-person teaching and learning. I too am coming home, back to district 21, where my administrative career began.

I thank you for this opportunity to introduce myself and look forward to collaborating and working with each of you.

Sincerely,

Matthew Barone
